Client brief:
- The clients are a couple in their mid-fifties. Their Children are grown up and have moved away. They would like a garden that reflects their interests. They both like gardening and spending time outside.
- Their house is an Edwardian brick-built terraced house in North London with a north facing back garden.
- Requirements:
- They would like a lawn and a small (4m2) vegetable area, with a compost bin
- They do not want an informal style of garden, or anything that looks too modern
- They do not want overhead beams or pergola but would consider a small water feature
- They would like a seating area in the sun
- They need a small shed (no bigger than 1.8 x 1.2m), and somewhere to put a washing line with dry access
- They like seeing wildlife in the garden
- They would like a small area to sit out and eat occasionally
Garden Design Layout & Model:
Notes on Design:
The paths are made with red brick pavers which matches the Edwardian house.
Both patio areas are Yorkstone paving (eco friendly) - paving slabs different sizes
Water feature - attracts wildlife
Veg bed area at the back of the garden where there is most sunlight. Can also put a small table and chairs under the tree and look back at the house. I know you both love gardening and growing vegetables so I wanted to create a hole seperate area which is sectioned off by a small fence and gate.
Two birch trees have 2 purposes: 1) they act as a focal point standing together in the centre of the garden and 2) they block your view as you walk up the garden which encourages you to move up through the garden and see what is past them.
Tree as you come out of the double doors is a Acer which is a focal point from the house.
Mixed planting surrounds the garden to break up the lines and blur the boundaries so you don’t know where the garden starts/ends. The garden is North facing so the plants are shade tolerant including ferns etc
The bench is surrounded by wild-life friendly planting
Yorkstone gravel is used in the veg bed area: have used the same material but in different formats to keep it simple.
